We come to the Heart of the Mass. The Consecration is the mystery when ordinary becomes divine. What was bread and wine, at the conclusion of the words of the priest, the species are the Body and Blood of Christ. The words must be spoken by the Priest, not because he holds special powers, but it is the sacrifice that Christ is making, and by his ordination the soul of the priest is conformed to Christ so that Christ acts in him. The words also are Christ’s own words, deepening the eternal mystery that what is taking place is not a mere memorial of an event of the past, but a Divine Recollection into the that very moment.
