Week 2: Separation of the Waters

During the first day, the soul once in darkness experiences light for the first time, and by separating the light from the darkness, its mind becomes aware, for the first time of the darkness in which it has lived and the light for which it was created. The light also gives it the grace, for the first time, of sight and recognition of things. But like the eyes and ears, and all of the senses of the newborn child, it does not immediately know either how to interpret what it is seeing or what these things are that it sees and hears and touches. We may say that God begins educating the soul in the second day. Here, He creates the firmament in the sky, separating the waters above from the waters below,. Without such a separation, the soul remains lost in a mixture of the waters, it has no bearing or way under its own abilities to discern what is above from below. The waters are separated, much like water from water which is indiscernible.
