Each Mass has a setting, referring to the melody and tone of the ordinary and propers that are sung. Through the music, this helps us emphasize different aspects and draw us in emotionally. Some settings sound more penitential, others more joyous. While many settings have been composed over the years, at St. Mary’s, we typically use four, to emphasize the liturgical season. For Lent and Advent we use Mass XVII, also helping connect the relationship between these seasons. For Christmas, Missa de Angelis; for Easter Lux et Origo; And in Ordinary Time, Missa Simplex, the setting that is given in the Roman Missal.
