The Early Church (6 weeks beginning on 19 February 2018)

The history of the Catholic Church begins with its founding by Jesus Christ himself.  The Apostles feared for their lives after the Crucifixion of our Lord and yet Christendom developed into a dominant force that survived beyond the Roman Empire itself, even converting the people who conquered Rome.  It faced persecution after persecution and contended with heresies that threatened its very existence and yet “shaped the development of Western civilization” for fifteen centuries.

The history of the Catholic Church as presented by Claude R. Sasso, Ph.D. will be divided into four separate courses of six weeks each at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Independence on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm.   There will be a break of several weeks between each course.  If you never experienced Church history in all its adventures and struggles, this is your time.

The first course, on the Early Church will introduce you to the Early Church Fathers and Saints, the development of the Church as an underground, home church and the early Church Councils. It will give you many new insights into the heroic beginnings and fascinating men and women of the early Church in a Roman world climaxing in the conversion of Emperor Constantine and the early development of Christendom.  It will progress from the preaching of apostles and the development of the monastic movement through the Arian crisis and beyond to the papacy of St. Gregory the Great.
